Centennial HallThe story of Syria's White Helmets with author Jennifer Krausewitz
In 2013, regular men from all walks of life in war-torn Syria banded together to carry out search and rescue operations for neighbours trapped in the rubble of regime bomb blasts. The colour of their hard hats earned them the nickname the "White Helmets."
Jennifer Krausewitz explores the origins, work, and controversies surrounding the Syrian White Helmets in White Is Not the Colour of Surrender. Krausewitz looks at how the Assad government and their allies used media campaigns to discredit the White Helmets amidst the recognition they were receiving, such as Nobel Peace Prize nominations, for their humanitarian work. Krausewitz discusses how narratives are shaped during wartime and the role information warfare plays in obscuring the truth in conflict.
