Why Everyone Should Read Science Fiction
Science fiction is not what you think. Since the dawn of the genre, science fiction has been at the forefront of social-justice debates. If you suppose you know what science fiction is all about because you’ve seen Star Wars, join Robert J. Sawyer—"the dean of Canadian science fiction" according to the Ottawa Citizen—to really introduce you to science fiction, a profound mode of storytelling invented over 200 years ago by a woman.
Robert J. Sawyer is one of only eight writers ever (and the only Canadian) to win all three of the world’s top awards for best science-fiction novel of the year: the Hugo, the Nebula, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. The ABC TV series, FlashForward, was based on Rob’s Aurora Award-winning novel of the same name; Rob’s latest novel (his 25th) is The Downloaded. He is a member of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, and one of the initial inductees into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
