A CBC IDEAS conversation on the library’s role in democracy
Libraries have become a target in the culture wars unfolding across the continent. Yet they remain an accessible resource on a vast range of topics and perspectives, including ideas which may be unconventional, or unpopular. As a home for intellectual freedom, can libraries remind Canadians what democracy is all about, and which values are still worth fighting for? Join CBC IDEAS host, Nahlah Ayed, in discussion with author Ira Wells (On Book Banning), librarians, and a community audience at Burlington Public Library.
This event is presented in collaboration with CBC IDEAS as part of a cross-Canada series about the health of our democracy, focusing on local solutions with the potential to inspire national change. Moderated by Nahlah Ayed, the discussions will be recorded in Burlington, Charlottetown, Edmonton, and Nanaimo for CBC’s IDEAS for a Better Canada series. The series is part of the CBC Collab fund and in partnership with the Samara Centre for Democracy.
NOTE: Due to limited seating and high demand, there will be a check of registration and identification prior to entry to this event.
Nahlah Ayed is the host CBC Radio’s IDEAS and a veteran of foreign reporting: first, in the Middle East and later, in London, where she covered many of the major stories of our time: the rise of authoritarianism, the return of war to Europe, and the worldwide refugee crisis. Nahlah’s work has been recognized through numerous national and international awards and honourary degrees. She is the author of two books, both national bestsellers.
