About What's Mine and Yours
An intergenerational saga of two families whose lives collide and overlap over 30 years. When a county initiative in the Piedmont of North Carolina forces the students at a mostly black public school to move across town to a nearly all-white high school, the community rises in outrage. Supporting the integration is Jade, Gee's steely, single, black mother, grieving for her murdered partner, but determined to give her son a better chance. Opposing the integration is Noelle's enterprising mother, Lacey May, who refuses to see her half-Latina daughters as anything but white. The uneasy waltz of these two families captures larger tensions within the community. The choices these mothers make will affect the life they live and the people they love. This book provides a sharp, poignant look at the ways race affects even the closest of relationships.
