with local birder & naturalist Peter Thoem
LIVE via ZOOM
The west end of Lake Ontario, including Burlington Bay/Hamilton Harbour and Cootes Paradise, is very bird-rich, partly due to the almost year-round movement of migrating birds. As a result, there is some change in the cast of characters that make up Burlington's bird population nearly every month of the year. From early spring arrivals in March to late fall south-bound migrants in December, local birders have lots to keep them busy.
A lifetime naturalist and avid birder, Peter Thoem talks about the ever-changing mix of birds in our area and his experiences tracking and observing our feathered friends locally and abroad.
Since his retirement in 2010, Peter Thoem has undertaken many projects related to wildlife and natural areas. He volunteers on numerous projects at Royal Botanical Gardens including spearheading a multi-year bird population study and is currently a speaker ambassador for The Owl Foundation. He has dedicated many hours and days at bird observatories in Ontario and Central Asia and has travelled to Arabia, Kenya, and Uganda on wildlife survey work.
