The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world by total area and contain roughly 20 percent of the world’s fresh water—but they also hold six thousand lost ships and tens of thousands of drowned and missing souls.
From phantom vessels still sailing their final routes to lighthouse keepers who never abandoned their posts, Mark Leslie explores the supernatural history of North America’s inland seas in his collection, Ghost Stories of the Great Lakes. Charting a course through all five lakes, Leslie draws on historical archives, Indigenous oral traditions, and firsthand witness accounts to blend maritime history, regional folklore, and paranormal nonfiction.

Waterloo-based author Mark Leslie Lefebvre has written more than forty books, including a shelf full of true ghost stories that have sent shivers through readers near and far. Writing as Mark Leslie, he also pens horror and the Canadian Werewolf urban fantasy series. He has spent more than three decades in the book industry as a bookseller and representative, and hosts the long-running Stark Reflections on Writing & Publishing podcast.
