With Sarah Raughley, author of The Bones of Ruin
Mainstream historical fiction is overstocked with straight, white main characters—but that's not historical reality. Hear how Sarah Raughley, bestselling author of The Effigies and The Bones of Ruin series, re-imagines historical time periods to include underrepresented and marginalized main characters. She reveals how she approaches researching and writing to create compelling characters that give voice and identity to those traditionally not represented in historical fiction.
YA author Sarah Raughley is a huge fangirl of anything from manga to sci-fi fantasy TV to Japanese role-playing games and other geeky things, all of which inspire her writing. She's been nominated for the Aurora Award for Best YA Novel and works in the community doing writing workshops. With a PhD in English, her research concerns representations of race and gender in popular media culture, youth culture, and postcolonialism. Sarah grew up in Southern Ontario writing stories and continues to use her voice for good.
