Author of The Marionette
Acclaimed novelist Terry Fallis, known for his sharp wit and compelling storytelling, explores the craft of humour writing and why it remains surprisingly scarce in Canadian publishing. Humour has the power to present new perspectives and reveal social truths while delighting readers, so why isn't there more of it on bookstore shelves? Drawing from personal experience and his award-winning novels, Fallis takes a look at readers' expectations, publishing challenges, and literary tastes in an effort to explain why there isn't a bigger market for humour writing in Canada by Canadians.
A Different Drummer Books will be on site with books for sale and signing after the talk.
Terry Fallis is the author of ten novels, all of them national bestsellers—including six #1 bestsellers. His debut novel, The Best Laid Plans (2008) and No Relation (2014) won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. Winner of CBC Canada Reads in 2011, The Best Laid Plans was adapted into a CBC Television miniseries in 2014 and a stage musical in 2015. The High Road (2010), Up and Down (2012), and Poles Apart (2015) were finalists for the Leacock Medal.
