With Brandon Reid, author of Beautiful Beautiful
For emerging writers, the debut book is a milestone unlike any other—being recognized with critical acclaim and hailed as award-worthy marks the beginning of an incredible literary journey, shaping a promising career ahead! Meet BC author, Brandon Reid, a member of the Heiltsuk First Nation with a mix of Indigenous and English ancestry, whose novel, Beautiful Beautiful, explores indigeneity, masculinity, and cultural tradition with humour and heart.
Beautiful Beautiful follows 12-year-old Derik as he travels to Bella Bella in northern BC for his grandfather’s funeral. Along the way, he uncovers the traumatic history of his ancestors, considers his relationship to masculinity, and explores the contrast between rural and urban lifestyles in hopes of reconciling the seemingly unreconcilable—the beauty within both Indigenous and "Western" ways of life. Narrated by Derik’s spiritual guardian, Redbird, who brings light to an otherwise grave subject, Beautiful Beautiful is a wonderfully creative coming-of-age story.
Brandon Reid holds a B.Ed. from the University of British Columbia with a specialization in Indigenous education, and a journalism diploma from Langara College. In addition to Reid's debut novel, Beautiful Beautiful, being shortlisted for the 2024 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, he is also a finalist for the BC Book Prizes' Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. He lives in Richmond, BC.
