A history talk with Museums of Burlington
LIVE via ZOOM
April marks Poetry Month and the 100th anniversary of the Burlington Cenotaph’s dedication. Poetry was a popular form of expression among Canadian soldiers during the First World War, with Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae’s "In Flanders Field" having become a worldwide anthem of remembrance since its publication in 1915. Although much poetry produced during and after the First World War takes on a tone of sorrow and remembrance, there were also times of levity and camaraderie captured in verse. This talk examines poetry written by Canadians during the war in trench journals, and why certain pieces gained such popularity in the following years.
